Competitive Algorithms for Layered Graph Traversal

چکیده
A layered graph is a connected graph whose vertices are partitioned into sets L0 = {s}, L1, L2, ..., and whose edges, which have nonnegative integral weights, run between consecutive layers. Its width is max{|Li|}. In the on-line layered graph traversal problem, a searcher starts at s in a layered graph of unknown width and tries to reach a target vertex t; however, the vertices in layer i and the edges between layers i−1 and i are only revealed when the searcher reaches layer i−1. We give upper and lower bounds on the competitive ratio of layered graph traversal algorithms. We give a deterministic on-line algorithm which is O(9)-competitive on width-w graphs and prove that for no w can a deterministic on-line algorithm have a competitive ratio better than 2w−2 on width-w graphs. We prove that for all w, w/2 is a lower bound on the competitive ratio of any randomized on-line layered graph traversal algorithm. For traversing layered graphs consisting of w disjoint paths tied together at a common source, we give a randomized on-line algorithm with a competitive ratio of O(logw) and prove that this is optimal up to a constant factor.

Strategies for Parallel Unaware Cleaners
We investigate the parallel traversal of a graph with multiple robots unaware of each other. All robots traverse the graph in parallel forever and the goal is to minimize the time needed until the last node is visited (first visit time) and the time between revisits of a node (revisit time). We also want to minimize the visit time, i.e. the maximum of the first visit time and the time between r...

Highly accurate speech recognition with very low latency is a big challenge but also an important requirement for modern real-time speech recognition applications such as speech-to-speech translation. We attack this problem by proposing a highly effective and efficient streaming mode decoding scheme. A novel multi-layered feature streaming method is introduced to minimize truncation errors duri...

Search-based optimization methods have been used for software engineering activities such as software testing. In the field of software testing, search-based test data generation refers to application of meta-heuristic optimization methods to generate test data that cover the code space of a program. Automatic test data generation that can cover all the paths of software is known as a major cha...

We study the problem of exploring an unknown undirected connected graph. Beginning in some start vertex, a searcher must visit each node of the graph by traversing edges. Upon visiting a vertex for the first time, the searcher learns all incident edges and their respective traversal costs. The goal is to find a tour of minimum total cost. Kalyanasundaram and Pruhs [23] proposed a sophisticated ...

In this paper we review the traversal algorithms for kd-trees for ray tracing. Ordinary traversal algorithms such as sequential, recursive, and those with neighbor-links have different limitations, which led to several new developments within the last decade. We describe algorithms exploiting ray coherence and algorithms designed with specific hardware architecture limitations such as memory la...
